SINGAPORE - The National University of Singapore law student at the centre of the sex-for-grades corruption trial was the first witness who took to the stand this morning. Ms Darrine Ko told the court that she knew law don, Associate Professor Tey Tsun Hang, well.

This was the reason why she bought a Mont Blanc pen worth S$740 and gave it to Associate Professor Tey. She said that it was a "belated birthday present" and she "liked" Mr Tey "as a friend" during that time.

Associate Professor Tey, a former District Judge, has been charged with six counts of obtaining gratification from his student between May 2010 and June 2010. As his trial began this morning, Associate Professor Tey, 41, sought to conduct his own defence. But Chief District Judge Tan Siong Thye rejected this.
 
Instead, the judge ordered defence counsel Peter Low to assist Associate Professor Tey in the trial, but not conduct the cross-examinations. The Prosecution has lined up 14 witnesses for its case. The trial continues later today. AMANDA LEE

Background Behind the NUS Law Sex-for-grade Scandal

Prof Tey Tsun Hang, a National University of Singapore (NUS) professor, faces six corruption charges for allegedly showing favour to his former student, Darinne Ko Wen Hui, between May and July 2010.
 
Prof Tey is the favourite of the current NUS Law School Dean, Prof Simon Chesterman, who also happens to be the son-in-law of Singapore's President Tony Tan. He is also a close associate of various judges and men in the corridors of power that rule. These connections allowed Tey – a Singapore PR and Malaysian –to be appointed as a district judge and state counsel in Singapore.  

Darinne Ko – a ‘pious’ and an extremely ‘devoted’ Christian – initiated contact with Prof Tey and seduced him in exchange for superior grades. In addition to sexual favours, Tey allegedly received from Darinne a Mont Blanc pen worth S$740, two tailor-made shirts valued at S$236.20, an iPod Touch worth S$160 and payment of a bill amounting to S$1,278.60

Alas, Prof Tey didn’t stop at one.

In his first affidavit, it was revealed that Prof Tey had corruptly obtaining sex from three female and two male former students in his Law Faculty office as corrupt gratification from them. The two male students are Xiao Fuhong (萧富宏) and Zhang Weiyang (张伟扬) and the female students are Zhou Yiling (周意玲) and Lin Meiyi (林美仪). 

Despite all these revelations, Prof Tey continued to work and teach on-campus after his first arrest:

Upping the Ante

Fearing he was losing public support, Prof Tey began an online astroturfing campaign in local forum Sammyboy.com to try and rescue his image.
 
Prof Tey also sought the assistance of popular opposition MP Silvia Lim to partner incumbent lawyer Peter Low (you may know him as the Lawyer representing the SMRT Strikers). The decision was purportedly made as Tey was worried about Peter Low’s track record of losing high profile media cases.

Mysteriously, Sylvia Lim has dropped out of the case, and Tey has discharged the services of Peter Low in order to represent himself. The reasons for these numerous changes are unknown at his point. But the SHS is watching this case closely and will update whenever possible.

Yahoo has reported that Darinne Ko lost her virginity to Prof Tey and the report has listed down the cost of the items which Prof Tey had obtained from Darinne Ko.

Prof Tey - Does silent means admission?

Prof Tey Tsun Hang, 41, arrived in court on 24 Aug 2012 (Thurs) afternoon with his lawyer for a pre-trial conference. Reacting differently from his previous encounters with reporters, Prof Tey refused to reply to the queries made by reporters. When constantly pushed for an answer if he had indeed had sex with his student, Darinne Ko Wen Hui, between May and July 2010, Prof Tey smiled but decline to comment further. Many may assumed that this would mean a silent admission as the answer should be simple and blunt if otherwise, nonetheless, I guess we will know in mid October 2012 when he is due to appear in court again. the trial is expected to last for 9 days.

 

Ex-CNB Chief Ng Boon Gay only had oral sex with Cecilia Sue

It is with disbelief that many Singaporeans came to know that Ex-CNB Chief Ng Boon Gay could have only engaged in oral sex with IT Executive Cecilia Sue Siew Nang. It is highly uncommon for healthy males in Singapore to only engage in oral sex and not ask for more.

Despite being charged for four counts of obtaining sexual favours, all in the form of oral sex, the highly effective corruption busters at CPIB could not find any further evidence of sexual intercourse. Ng, being a highly accomplished policeman, could have employed counter-measures to conceal his acts of infidelity.

Ex-CNB chief claims trial in sex-for-contracts case

Former Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) chief Ng Boon Gay will be claiming trial for all four charges of corruption in the sex-for-favours case.

The 46-year old has been accused of obtaining sexual favours – all in the form of oral sex – from Cecilia Sue Siew Nang, a sales manager of two IT vendors, in return for "furthering the business interests" of the companies she was working for.

Ng’s lawyers - senior counsel Tan Chee Meng and Melanie Ho from WongPartnership – had previously refrained from deciding if Ng would claim trial pending the release of more information and how the charges against Ng had helped “further the business interests” of the companies.

In a media statement on Thursday afternoon, the lawyers said they have yet to be provide with the requested information.

Sue was a sales manager with Hitachi Data Systems from June to November 2011. It was during this period that Ng’s first two offences were committed. Sue joined Oracle Corporation Singapore a month later as senior sales manager.

According to the charge sheets, the first two alleged sexual encounters took place when Sue was in Hitachi – the first between June and July last year, and the between last October and November. The third and fourth incidents allegedly happened in December when Sue was in Oracle. The specific locations, however, were not stated.

Ng’s wife, Yap Yen Yen, previously voiced her support for him in a statement and said she never doubted his professional integrity.



Sex-for-business case: Ex-CNB chief to claim trial

SINGAPORE - Former Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) chief Ng Boon Gay has announced through his lawyers that he will be claiming trial for all four charges of corruption he is facing in relation to the high profile sex-for-business case.

The 46-year-old Ng had allegedly received sexual gratification from Ms Cecilia Sue Siew Nang, who was then an employee of IT vendors Oracle Corporation Singapore and Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), in return for "furthering the business interests" of the companies she was working for.

The Straits Times (ST) reported that his lawyers had previously said that is too premature for Ng to decide if he will claim trial against the corruption charges he faces as the particulars of the case were not yet made available.

In a media statement released to the press yesterday, the lawyers reiterated that they have yet to be given the specifics of the charges brought against Ng.

Ng's lawyer had previously raised to the court that the charges against Ng did not clarify how he had helped "further the business interests" of the companies.

Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng and Ms Melanie Ho said yesterday that the generality of the charges is a point they intend to bring before the trial judge.

His lawyers are asking for the prosecution to reveal what are the supposed corrupt acts after the alleged trysts between Ng and Sue, as well as the business interests that were allegedly furthered.

According to a previous ST report, it is believed that Oracle had no IT-related dealings with CNB during Ng's term as chief between February last year and his suspension on Jan 25.

In addition, HDS, believed to be a sub-contractor for CNB's IT tenders, was not directly awarded any contracts by the agency.

An earlier report in ST said that although the charge sheets stated that alleged trysts between Ms Sue and Ng happened over a period of six months, both are said to have been close since 2009.

Ng's wife said in a statement to the media that she has never doubted his professional integrity and will continue to stand by him.

Editor's Note: Ng Boon Gay was subsequently found NOT GUILTY by the court as he was able to prove that Ms Sue and him were lovers. Well, in the eye of the law, there is no offence for being adulterers.
