Due to the brilliant CSI work by HWZ forummers, NParks officer Bernard Lim, who was in-charge of the government tender for Brompton bicycles, was shown to be suspiciously connected to the suppliers who eventually won the bid. After NParks' internal audit found discrepancies, Bernard was suspended from duty and the case referred to CPIB.
However, in another case, despite being arrested called up CPIB in April and subsequently arrested, Prof Tey Tsun Hang from NUS Law School, continued to work and teach on-campus until the current academic term ended.
He is now out on bail and his profile can still be seen on NUS Law School, Asia's Global Law School. No discipline action has been taken by NUS and the Prof is even going for his sabbatical leave next month possibly on his full salary. This is a stark difference as compared to the treatment given to Bernard Lim.
Prof Tey is being accused of giving good grades to a student in exchange for sexual favours. It is unsure if Prof Tey only received oral sex like ex-CNB Chief Ng Boon Gay or went the whole nine-yards with the student half his age. Sources close to the matter have informed that the student involved goes by the name of Darinne Ko.
Ms Ko was said to have confided in a friend about her relationship with Prof Tey and the improper conduct was later brought to the attention of CPIB. Meanwhile, despite being aware of the investigations into sexual impropriety between lecturer and student, NUS continues to let the Prof roam around campus.
Prof Ko, who does not look like he is in his 40s, is said to be gregarious, funny and popular with the students. He is a brilliant lawyer and law professor and was worked as a State Counsellor and District Judge prior to his appointment with NUS. It is unknown if the courts are reviewing the judgements passed by Tey when he was a district judge. Prof Tey is married to a Japanese wife and they have a child.
Despite being investigated in Apr by CPIB in the sex-for-grades case, Prof Tey Tsun Hang was allowed to continue teaching in NUS Law School until 26 July when he was charged in court and then suspended by NUS Law School on the same day.
ReplyDeleteSuch special treatment was not granted to former SCDF Commissioner Peter Lim, ex-CNB Director Ng Boon Gay and NParks' Bernard Lim. These men were all suspended from duty once CPIB began investigations. Why is Prof Tey any different?
Unknown to many Singaporeans, Prof Tey is the favourite of the current NUS Law School Dean, Prof Simon Chesterman, who also happens to be the son-in-law of Singapore's President Tony Tan. Prof Chesterman allowed Prof Tey to continue teaching young impressionable female students while drawing his salary despite being fully aware of the on-going CPIB investigations.
Even though Prof Tey has broken the moral trust between teacher and student, NUS continues to place faith in him.
Prof Tey is a close associate of various judges and men in the corridors of power that rule. Otherwise, how would a Singapore PR and Malaysian come to be appointed as a district judge and state counsel in Singapore where political masters are especially wary of enemies from up north. How often do you see a PR in the upper echelons of the civil service?
There are speculations saying that Prof Tey might be not be convicted of the charges or the punishment would be a light slap on the wrist due to some back-door brokering. Some are even saying that the case would not proceed beyond the pre-trial conference where an assessment has to be made if the prosecution has a case.
Like some lawyer turned high ranking kitchen cabinet official, Prof Tey was also known to have cheated on his wife in his previous jobs. It remains to be seen if Darinne Ko Hui Wen is the only student that Prof Tey had a relationship with.
